Grading Gemstones


Like any collectable, the price of a gemstone is determined by it rarity. The main factors that influnce gems prices are its colour, cut, clarity and carat weight.

Colour;

The most important factor in grading and valuing coloured gems is the colour of the stone. The grading standard developed by the GIA for fancy coloured gems are;

  • Faint
  • Very light
  • Fancy light
  • Fancy
  • Fancy intense
  • Fancy deep/dark and
  • Fancy vivid.
